Ryan Getzlaf gives Kids a Suite Experience!

Friday, February 12, will be a day to remember for lucky Calgary kids!

Ryan Getzlaf, of the Anaheim  Ducks and former Calgary Hitmen, sponsors The Getzlaf’s Gamers at Kids Up Front, in partnership with Telus and the Calgary Hitmen. For 20 Hitmen home games each season, Kids Up Front takes 10 kids to the game in the Telus suite, have special treats and some awesome Getzlaf swag – a hat, signed photo and letter. The kids get to be featured on the jumbo tron, have a special visit from Farley the Fox as well as Hitmen players who aren’t on the ice who visit and sign all the kids t-shirts. It’s an amazing night and the kids are thrilled.

But nothing will compare to the Getzlaf’s Gamers Suite on Friday, Feb 12. The look on the kids faces as they entered the Telus suite and Ryan Getzlaf himself welcomed them! The group that attended were from the Boys and Girls Club in Pineridge. They had painted their faces and were so excited to attend the game - and they had no idea that they were getting a special visit!  Ryan spent the whole game with them, and even brought in a couple of his friends – Corey Perry and George Parros, also of the Anaheim Ducks. The kids asked them to sign every piece of clothing they had!

One young man, Alex, had an additional privileged of being a part of the ceremonial puck drop at the beginning of the game with Ryan Getzlaf.  Alex had attended the Getzlaf’s Gamers last season, and made an impression on everyone with his great personality! So he was invited back to be able to meet Ryan in person. The staff from the Boys and Girls club were so thrilled for Alex, and stated that he deserved this awesome opportunity.

Kids Up Front also had a wonderful opportunity to give an amazing gift to Ryan. An artist from Edmonton, Janet Deane (www.janetdeane.com), approached Kids Up Front and offered to create a piece of art specifically for Kids Up Front to give to Ryan Getzlaf. She delivered it to Calgary on Friday and the kids presented it to him in the suite. The artwork is amazing, valued at over $15,000. The word “generosity” runs throughout the piece and also features the quote “The legacy of a player is not only made by high scores and milestones, but becoming a role model to a child by scoring high in compassion and kindness, understanding and generosity.”  Under the artwork is a plaque that says “Thank you Ryan for inspiring dreams in Calgary’s Kids - Kids Up Front Foundation 2010”. Ryan was blown away with the gift as it is truly beautiful!

As you cheer for Team Canada this week, give an extra shout out for Ryan Getzlaf who has a BIG heart and deserves a gold medal!!

An Enterprising Christmas

Once again, the management and staff of Enterprise Rent-A-Car outdid themselves, hosting a party for about 80 kids and their families. The kids enjoyed Christmas craft-making, a hotdog lunch, and even a visit from Santa--complete with a gift!

Bear-y Generous Donor

Imagine the fun of stuffing, dressing, and even accessorizing your own teddy bear. That was a November afternoon's activity for 17 kids at Build-a-Bear in Chinook Mall, thanks to the generosity of one donor whose own daughter had similar fun, and who wanted to share the opportunity with others.

Special Opportunities

Calgary KIDS had some wonderfully unique ticket opportunities this summer, including a boat tour, 9-hole golfing, and several one-of-a-kind concerts. For one little girl, a ticket to attend dance class turned into something much more. Here's an exerpt from an email we received:

"I thought you would like to know that (she) did so well in her attendance at DJD and she enjoyed the classes ever so much that she has been offered a bursary by DJD to take lessons in September. Hooray for Kids Up Front!"

A ticket really can become a doorway to a dream. We say "Hooray!" to all our donors and supporters.

Golf & Other Goodwill

Once again, Focus used their annual golf tournament to help raise funds for Kids Up Front--this year generating over 650 dollars to help cover costs and create opportunities for Calgary and area KIDS. And J2 International collected donations in store, for a gift of almost $1000!

Such gifts and goodwill are very appreciated, particularly during the summer when our charitable partners are looking for ways to keep their kids active and involved. If you'd like to help and wonder what we need, we welcome you to check our new 'wish list' on the Calgary home page or give us a call anytime at (403) 444-4318.

Art with heart

Several local artists and artisans whose work was featured at a June luncheon for clients of TD Waterhouse offered to donate a percentage of their profits to Kids Up Front. Over 600 dollars was the generous result, and KIDS Calgary is most appreciative! Our thanks to the artists and the event organizers, and also to TD Waterhouse and its clients.

Building Community Capacity

KIDS Calgary is pleased to have been awarded a grant toward 'Building Community Capacity" from The Calgary Foundation. The Calgary Foundation is committed to strengthening the charitable sector in Calgary and area. This funding will help KIDS assess its operations, as well as to plan and implement strategies that will help the organization continue to effectively respond to the growing need for its services.

That's the Ticket!
