An Enterprising Christmas

Once again, the management and staff of Enterprise Rent-A-Car outdid themselves, hosting a party for about 80 kids and their families. The kids enjoyed Christmas craft-making, a hotdog lunch, and even a visit from Santa--complete with a gift!

Bear-y Generous Donor

Imagine the fun of stuffing, dressing, and even accessorizing your own teddy bear. That was a November afternoon's activity for 17 kids at Build-a-Bear in Chinook Mall, thanks to the generosity of one donor whose own daughter had similar fun, and who wanted to share the opportunity with others.

Dino-mite!

Two groups of school kids got a bus ride and admission to the Royal Tyrell Musuem in Drumheller in October, where they where able to take part in fossil casting workshops. This interactive, hands-on learning is a big plus for many students who do not routinely go on field trips.

Right to the top!

Just over 30 kids and their families--most of whom are new Canadians--were treated to a luxurious coach ride to and from Banff, a mountain-perfect picnic lunch, and a ride on the gondola to really 'top' it all off. This was a great gift for the kids from Girish Agrawal and his executive team at the Investors Group. The kids were wowed, and so are we. Thank you very much!

Special Opportunities

Calgary KIDS had some wonderfully unique ticket opportunities this summer, including a boat tour, 9-hole golfing, and several one-of-a-kind concerts. For one little girl, a ticket to attend dance class turned into something much more. Here's an exerpt from an email we received:

"I thought you would like to know that (she) did so well in her attendance at DJD and she enjoyed the classes ever so much that she has been offered a bursary by DJD to take lessons in September. Hooray for Kids Up Front!"

A ticket really can become a doorway to a dream. We say "Hooray!" to all our donors and supporters.

Ride 'em, Cowpokes!

Thanks to the Calgary Stampede Young Riders Program, hundreds of kids got a chance to watch the rodeo events during this year's Calgary Stampede. For about 60 others, there was a trip to Our Lady Queen of Peace Ranch, to get up close and personal with the livestock and ranch life.

Golf & Other Goodwill

Once again, Focus used their annual golf tournament to help raise funds for Kids Up Front--this year generating over 650 dollars to help cover costs and create opportunities for Calgary and area KIDS. And J2 International collected donations in store, for a gift of almost $1000!

Such gifts and goodwill are very appreciated, particularly during the summer when our charitable partners are looking for ways to keep their kids active and involved. If you'd like to help and wonder what we need, we welcome you to check our new 'wish list' on the Calgary home page or give us a call anytime at (403) 444-4318.

Nexen's Day at the Park

Just over 40 kids and companions were treated by Nexen to picnic and play July 21 at Calaway Park. Nexen staff organized the day, and served up plenty of food and fun before an afternoon of non-stop rides in the great summer sun. A terrific time was had by all!

CMRA Revving up the Fun

The Calgary Motorcycle Racing Association invited Calgary KIDS to an afternoon at Race City, including a hotdog lunch and special guided tour of the 'paddock', where racers answered the kids questions and even let them sit on the bikes before the race event! This is the first of two such events--watch for more news and photos in September.

Art with heart

Several local artists and artisans whose work was featured at a June luncheon for clients of TD Waterhouse offered to donate a percentage of their profits to Kids Up Front. Over 600 dollars was the generous result, and KIDS Calgary is most appreciative! Our thanks to the artists and the event organizers, and also to TD Waterhouse and its clients.

Building Community Capacity

KIDS Calgary is pleased to have been awarded a grant toward 'Building Community Capacity" from The Calgary Foundation. The Calgary Foundation is committed to strengthening the charitable sector in Calgary and area. This funding will help KIDS assess its operations, as well as to plan and implement strategies that will help the organization continue to effectively respond to the growing need for its services.

Music to our ears

Local recording artist, Mark Lorenz recently hosted a golf tournament with charitable proceeds to Kids Up Front. A great time was had by all, and approximately $1000 was raised to support the ticket program for Calgary and area kids. Thank you so much!
